Fireball XL5

A children's science fiction show, Fireball XL5 follows the adventures of the starship Fireball XL5, under the command of Colonel Steve Zodiac of the World Space Patrol. The husband-and-wife combination of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, through their firm APF and in partnership with ATV for ITC Entertainment, created the show in 1962. Anderson, while conceptualizing his new program, found the name of a particular kind of motor oil, Castrol XL, to have a catchy ring to it. In order to make the title more phonetically appealing, "Fireball XL" was born, with the "-5" appended because it lacked oomph without it. Supermarionation, a kind of puppetry developed by the Andersons and initially utilized in Four Feather Falls and Supercar, was included in the show, as it had been in previous Andersons' productions like Stingray and Captain Scarlet. All subsequent Anderson programs were shot in color, while the original Fireball XL5 ran for 39 half-hour episodes in black and white on 35mm film. While several Anderson shows have aired in syndication in the United States, only Fireball XL5 has ever been broadcast on a major American television network. Between September 1963 and September 1965, NBC aired the show during its Saturday morning kids block. Space Patrol, created by Gerry Anderson's former business partner and co-founder of AP Films, Arthur Provis, is sometimes mistaken for Anderson's Fireball XL5 because of the similarities between the two shows' locales and plots.
