Stretching to the calendar year 2000, the Entire History of Britain of Simon Schama does not pretend to be an authoritative chronicle of the turbulent events which shaped and snobby the British Isles. What Schama can do, however, is tell the story in vivid and gripping narrative conditions, with this fustiness of conventional academe, by examining the characters at the centre of them personalising historical events.
