Westfront 1918
A group of First World War German infantrymen live out their lives in the trenches of France. They find brief respite and entertainment in a village behind the lines, but their lives are dominated by anxiety as attacks on and from the French troops ebb and flow. Karl, one of the men, returns home on leave only to discover his family's degradation as a result of wartime poverty. He returns to the front lines just in time to face a massive French tank offensive.
