Within this Depression era tale, Calef stops from Spooner, Missouri, where he is hired by Lute for strange tasks and is travel to California from Michigan. Calef becomes a part of the niece of Lute , Hannah. But she's married to Sidney, a wife-beating drunk who hopes to inherit the money of his uncle-in-law. An eccentric preacher and sidney plot against Calef, who finds it hard to conceal his growing affection for Sidney's wife and his mysterious past.
