Little Miss Marker
A desperate gambler and owner of New York's Horseshoe Cabaret, where his lady Bangles Carson performs, Big Steve Halloway is in dire need of money. He arranges for his colleagues bookies, particularly Sorrowful Jones, to each give him $1,000 if his thoroughbred, Dream Prince, fails to win, and he receives this payment. As the bets are being placed at the window, Sorrowful comes across a gambler who has lost $500 and wants to place a bet but is unable to come up with the necessary $20. Marthy Jane (Shirley Temple) is instead used as security, or in bookie's parlance, a "marker," by her father. He commits suicide after losing his bet, leaving "little Miss Marker" in the care of Sorrowful Jones. The "gold digger" assists the "tight-wod" with his problems while Steve is hiding out in Chicago to avoid being investigated for his dishonest bets. Steve entrusts Sorrowful with the care of Bangles while he is away. When Big Steve discovers that Bangles is engaged with Sorrowful, he returns to New York to take action.
