Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life
Jakob arrives at the Institute Benjamenta (managed by brother and sister Johannes and Lisa Benjamenta) in order to study how to be a servant. Together with seven other males, he studies under Lisa, learning ridiculous lessons in movement, drawing circles, and servitude. He requests a room upgrade. No other pupils come, and none leave for work. Johannes is dissatisfied, overbearing, and removed from the school's operations. Lisa is stunning, initially firmly controlled, then on the point of collapse. A scent of incest is present. Lisa and Jakob are both attracted to one another. With the arrival of winter, she becomes catatonic. Things deteriorate; Johannes observes that all of this has occurred since Jakob's arrival. Exists a causal relationship?
