Achilles and the Tortoise
Machisu is a visual artist. He has never achieved the level of achievement to which he believes he is entitled. Regardless, he is perpetually optimistic about his chances of achievement. Despite these obstacles, his wife Sachiko continues to support him. Machisu, the illustrious collector's only son, possesses a childlike enthusiasm for painting. The young boy's goal of becoming a painter is sparked by praise from a famous artist friend of his father. Machisu, a poor loner, attends art school as a young man using money obtained through employment. He is introduced to a world of unorthodox inventiveness, but also has his first sour taste of severe criticism from a dealer. Encouragement comes in the form of lovely clerk Sachiko, who believes she is the only person who understands him. Machisu's marriage is quickly followed by the birth of a daughter, as love and hope motivate him to devote even more time and energy to his art...
